RIVERSIDE – On October 28, 2017 at about 4:09 a.m. Riverside Fire Department and Police responded to a head on collision with multiple trapped victims on Alessandro Boulevard at Gem.
Two vehicles were involved in the collision, a 2009 Kia Sorento being driven by a 26-year-old resident of Perris with a 22-year-old resident of Moreno Valley as a passenger and a white 2012 Nissan full-size van was being driven westbound on Alessandro by a 72-year-old resident of Moreno Valley with a 66-year-old resident of Moreno Valley as a passenger.
Both vehicles sustained major damage in the crash that according to the initial investigation was caused when the Sorento struck the center median at Gem while traveling eastbound on Alessandro Blvd.
The Sorento crossed into the westbound lanes of Alessandro Blvd and collided head on with the white Nissan van.
The driver of the van was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel. Firefighters had to physically extricate the remaining victims from both wreckages.
The passenger of both vehicles were transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Alessandro Blvd was closed in both directions of travel near the vicinity of the crash for approximately 4-5 hours pending the investigation and clearing of the roadway.
Drug impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending the coroner’s investigation and notification to next of kin.
