Hemet: On Tuesday, August 29 at about 1:30 a.m., Hemet Police Department responded to a man who climbed a power pole at the intersection of Sanderson Ave and Devonshire Ave threatening to jump.
Hemet Fire Department also responded and staged in the vicinity of the incident location. Arriving crews located the individual, almost to the top of the pole and close to the power lines.
The man was demanding to speak to his doctor and did not want police presence there or to speak to anyone else.
Southern California Edison cut power and numerous citizens were left without electricity but quickly was able to redirect electricity so that only commercial buildings were affected by the outage while Officers continue their attempt to talk the man down.
As of 7:30 a.m., the situation with the suicidal man came to an end when negotiations proved effective and he began to climb down. A crowd of onlookers was gathered around the location at the time and were watching the scene and some were heckling the individual.
The subject was found to be in possession of a box cutter that he dropped before climbing completely off the pole. When he finally reached the ground, he attempted to flee but was stopped when less than lethal rounds and a taser was deployed by Officers.
The man was taken into custody and brought to a local hospital for an ok to book and for a mental health evaluation. Southern California Edison finally restored power to the local businesses.
