Lake Elsinore: CHP Pursuit Ends in Officer Involved Shooting

screen-shot-2017-01-13-at-5-48-44-amOn January 11, 2017 at approximately 9:00 pm on the, CHP initiated a traffic stop of a black Ford F-150 that was driving erratically southbound on Interstate 15, south of Indian Truck Trail due to reasonable suspicion that the driver was under the influence.

When the driver of the pickup truck exited the vehicle, he confronted the officer verbally before opening fire upon him with an assault rifle. The officer fortunately wasn’t injured as he retreated in time. The suspect then proceeded to jump back into his pickup truck, heading southbound on the I-15 and leading officers into a pursuit during which he fired at pursuing officers and the helicopter.

The pursuit came to an end in Lake Elsinore, where the suspect and police became involved in a heavy gun battle that ended with no officers injured, but the suspect shot, who succumbed later to his injuries.

On January 11, 2017, at 8:58 PM, deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station responded to southbound Interstate 15, south of Indian Truck Trail, to assist a California Highway Patrol officer with an enforcement stop of an erratic driver.  The California Highway Patrol officer contacted the occupants of a black Ford F-150 regarding his suspicion the male driver was intoxicated. The driver verbally threatened the officer, exited his vehicle, and fired an assault rifle at the CHP officer. The officer retreated and the suspect abruptly fled in his vehicle south on Interstate 15. The officer was not injured.

The California Highway Patrol contacted the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to assist with locating the suspect. Several patrol units and a helicopter began to search the area. The suspect vehicle was located and a pursuit ensued. At various times during the pursuit the suspect continued to fire an assault rifle at pursuing units and the helicopter.

The pursuit continued into a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Villa Roma and Via Palmieki Court, within the Tuscany Hills community of Lake Elsinore.  The suspect exited his vehicle and fired upon deputies with his assault rifle resulting in a deputy involved shooting. The suspect attempted to gain access to a residence within the community and discharged his weapon into a home. Shortly thereafter, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT Team responded to the scene. The  suspect fired upon SWAT Team personnel with his assault rifle and a second deputy involved shooting occurred. Deputies rendered medical aid but the suspect ultimately succumbed to his injuries.  His identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin. No deputies or members of the public were injured during the incident.

The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave per Department policy. Their names will not be released at this time. Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.
